The elementary students were divided into groups of about eight and rotated through 10 agriculture stations. Eighth-grade students from West Stanly Middle School toured in the afternoon. Each of the stations featured different aspects of agriculture: forestry, natural resources, soil, poultry, cattle, equine, farm equipment (a hay stacker and a cotton picker), swine, small ruminants (sheep and goats) and leadership/FFA. Coley Whitley teaches students about the spindles on a John Deere cotton picker during Ag Day at West Stanly High School. “We want to educate the students about agriculture first and foremost,” said senior Cristina Sells, the president of the school’s FFA group. West Stanly’s FFA group is comprised of 25 students. FFA stands for Future Farmers of America, which was the group’s original name until it was changed to National FAA Organizati...

These Primark Ultra Soft 100% Cotton bath towels had good results for speed of absorbency during our lab tests, so they will get you dry quickly. Impressively, they were awarded full marks for shrinkage, with hardly any after our repeated wash tests. It got fairly average results during our fade tests, with noticeable colour change. Our at-home testers also picked up on this. It’s a towel that moulded well around the body and felt soft and absorbent with a good thickness, though. Testers said it felt quite basic but all agreeing to buy it again, based on quality for the very low price. There’s a good range of colours to pick from, depending on your preference, but it’s worth noting they’re available to buy in-store only. Flight Review: Qatar Airways Business Class, Doha to Casablanca

After flying from Philadelphia to Doha, Qatar, and then spending an overnight in Doha, we were set for a nine-hour flight from Doha to Casablanca. Unlike our previous flight, which was on an Airbus A350, this flight was on a Boeing 777-300ER. Although Doha is out of the way when flying from the U.S. to Morocco, it ended up being the best way to book our flights. I was traveling on this trip with my 10-year-old son, and he had his heart set on flying business class. Using American Airlines AAdvantage miles is one of the best ways to book Qatar business class. American requires 70,000 AAdvantage miles per person to fly from the U.S. to the Middle East, or only 5,000 additional miles to anywhere in Africa. Doha to Casablanca clocks in at 3,569 flown miles — not bad for only an extra 5,000 AAdvantage miles. Our entire itinerary was Cincinnati to Philadelphia to Doha to Casablanca for 75,000 American AAdvantage miles and $19.30 per person. The Cincinnati to Philadelphia flight was in domestic first class on American Airlines, and the other two legs were in business class on Qatar Airways. The Philadelphia to Doha leg was in Qsuites, while the Doha to Casablanca leg was in non-QSuite ...

6 common holiday gifts to avoid — and what to give instead

Every holiday season, numerous magazine features and digital guides are devoted to helping shoppers find the perfect gift for everyone on their lists. The hunt for useful and appealing gifts for family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances can be overwhelming. Ashley Bronczek and Candace Ourisman knew the struggle and wanted to help. Two and a half years ago, the friends founded Secretly Gifting, a concierge gifting service. Clients entrust them to shop for their gifts year-round. Bronczek and Ourisman always suggest choosing gifts that match the recipient’s “passion points and interests.” But what if you don’t know the recipient very well? Their advice is to “get one of your favorite things.” Expressing your own personal taste shows that you’re invested in the exchange, even if you’re not close with the recipient. Aim for high-quality items with thoughtful details that are within your budget. Think of items that will last past the holidays, and don’t forget to nicely wrap whatever you buy. Ultimately, you want whoever receives the gift to like and use it, but there are some presents that will get more use than others. During the holidays, most people can count on receiving mul...

Driver seriously injured when dump truck lands on his car after blowing red light, cops say

A driver was seriously injured Thursday afternoon after a dump truck blew through a red light and overturned on top of his car in Atlantic County, police said. The driver of the 2007 Mack dump truck, a 37-year-old Vineland, was traveling west at 1:13 p.m. on Black Horse Pike in Hamilton when he failed to stop at the red light at the highway’s intersection with Weymouth Road, according to a statement from the Township of Hamilton Police Department At the same time, a 60-year-old Mays Landing man was driving his 2003 Honda Accord north on Weymouth Road and entered the intersection, authorities said. The truck driver swerved to try avoid hitting the Accord and it turned over onto the car, police said. The Accord driver was airlifted to a local hospital with serious injuries and the truck driver was also taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries, officials said. Traffic was diverted for nearly five hours following the crash which was still under investigation Thursday night. China 6×4 Truck-Tractor Chris Sheldon may be reached at csheldon@njadvancemedia.com. All 2,493 items targeted by China’s tariffs in US trade war — Quartz

China’s latest tariff retaliation, announced today, will hit some $60 billion in US exports, including hundreds of agricultural, mining, and manufactured products, threatening jobs and profits at companies around the United States.  Before the trade war starts in earnest, China bought about 17% of US agricultural exports and was a major market for other goods, from Maine lobster to Boeing aircraft. It has been the largest market for Apple iPhones since 2016. Since the escalation of tariffs, though, China has stopped buying soybeans and lobsters, and Apple warned it would miss its expected Christmas holiday sales figures because of trade tensions. In addition to the 25% tariffs below, Beijing also added 20% tariffs on 1,078 US products, 10% tariffs on 974 US products, and 5% tariffs on 595 US products (all links in Chinese). The list was translated from China’s ministry of finance press release using Google translate, and may be inexact in spots. Quartz also rearranged some items on the list to group them into categories, and they may not be in the order of their “harmonized tariff schedule” codes.  Slag Pots, Casting Ladle, Ingot Mold, Vertical Mill, Casting Moulds – Spec...

Looking for a new place to go? Check out our list of steakhouses, burger dives, food

Looking for a new place to go? Check out our list of steakhouses, burger dives, food halls, and all the other best spots that opened in the past year. Plus, our chef of the year! This wasn’t the year that the biggest chefs opened their grandest palaces of fine dining. But the Twin Cities has never seen a greater collection of next-wave steakhouses, food halls, burger dives, and 20-seat dining labs. Of course, it’s both annoying and pretentious to call food “art,” because 99.9 percent of food is just food. And that’s good and noble enough. And yet, opera at The Met is not just “singing,” and some food is indeed art. If you want to swallow some art in Minneapolis, you now go to Demi, Gavin Kaysen’s ticket-only, no-expense-spared restaurant, tucked behind his flagship North Loop landmark, Spoon and Stable. Your first course may be caviar on a coin of hay-smoked panna cotta, set in tiny nests of grapevines. Later courses tell a sensory story of place and time through spruce tips, beef, and octopus. Art collectors, as it were, have been snapping up all the tickets they can, and that seems right: Opera, too, lives by its superfans. In a life that’s mainly morning toast and rice bowls,...

Every day, retinal specialists are asked about the risks from blue light emitted from electronic devices. (Retinal specialists treat conditions affecting the retina, a thin tissue at the back of the eye that is responsible for vision.) Many people ask whether blue light will increase their risk of age-related macular degeneration and blindness. The short answer to this common question is no. The amount of blue light from electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, LCD TVs, and laptop computers, is not harmful to the retina or any other part of the eye. Blue light is visible light with a wave length between 400 and 450 nanometers (nm). As the name suggests, this type of light is perceived a...
