2017 California Wildfires: How Santa Rosa Businesses Are Healing

Family-owned Paradise Ridge Winery has been a fixture in California’s Sonoma County for more than two decades, hosting community events, wine tastings, and weddings on its grounds in the hills on the edge of the city of Santa Rosa. But business as usual came to a halt a year ago this week, when the Tubbs Fire, a devastating conflagration driven by powerful winds, swept through Santa Rosa. The fire began on Oct. 8, 2017, and by the early morning of Oct. 9, it had reached the winery’s 155-acre property. Co-owner Sonia Byck-Barwick describes her husband, Dan Barwick, jumping in the car to race to the winery from their home, 15 minutes away. “My husband’s the winemaker, so he was trying to get to his wine,” she recalls. But “by that point, the fire was burning across the freeway, so he couldn’t get down there.” No one in the family was harmed by the fire, but Paradise Ridge was ravaged: Six outbuildings, the combined tasting room and events center, and the winemaking building were all lost, along with three rental homes on the property. And the wines that had just been set aside after the harvest were gone. Situations like Byck-Barwick’s would be a catastrophe for any business. But ...

Evolving SSL luminaire designs demand innovative secondary optic designs (MAGAZINE)

LUCA MENEGHETTI of Khatod and MAURY WRIGHT examine the ongoing advancements in secondary optics for LED-based luminaires, including material options and innovation in design that deliver optimal optical performance. At a black-tie Gala held in the Mandalay Bay Convention Center (Las Vegas, NV) on Feb. 28, 2019, LEDs Magazine announced our fifth annual Sapphire Awards winners. As always, the award winners spanned the breadth of packaged LEDs and other enabling technologies to solid-state lighting (SSL) products intended for general illumination and specialty applications, and we named our Illumineer of the Year for 2019. As part of our ongoing celebration of the winners, and the innovation inherent in their work, we recently interviewed Luca Meneghetti, technical director at Khatod, about the Nactus 6×2 SIL silicone LED secondary optic that took the Sapphire Enabling Technology award. Optics represent a critical element of luminaire design that must both be optically efficient and match requirements of an application at hand in terms of beam distribution and reliability. Read on to learn more about how an innovative optic can enhance SSL product development.  LEDs Magazine:...

McDonald’s takes a nibble of the plant-based burger

McDonald’s said Thursday that will sell the PLT, or the plant, lettuce and tomato burger for 12 weeks in 28 restaurants in Southwestern Ontario by the end of the month. McDonald’s says it developed a special recipe using burgers from Beyond Meat, a California-based startup that makes “meat” from pea protein, canola oil, beet juice and other ingredients. The small-market test is rolling out about six months after rival Burger King began testing the plant-based Impossible Foods burger, a rival to Beyond Meat. It’s now selling the Impossible Whopper nationwide because of strong demand from customers. The entry of McDonald’s, the world’s largest burger chain, into the alternative meat arena has largely been seen as a question of when, and not if. Shares of Beyond Meat Inc. rose more than 11% to close at $154.34. The burgers aren’t really aimed at vegans or vegetarians, but at meat eaters who perceive plant-based eating as healthier and more environmentally conscious. In a recent survey, the consulting firm AlixPartners found that 61% of U.S. meat eaters sometimes order vegan or vegetarian food at restaurants. McDonald’s says the PLT will be grilled on the same grill used for meat a...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Albuquerque is stepping up security at its annual Balloon Fiesta, a nine-day event scheduled to begin Oct. 5. Officials said the event is adding metal detectors at entrances, having more stations for bag checks and involving more law enforcement agencies deploying uniformed officers, tactical teams and plain-clothed officers. The announcement said the enhanced security would ” provide an environment where guests can enjoy the event with greater peace of mind.” Officials suggested that visitors wanting to clear security checks faster limit how many items they take to the park and carry personal items in see-through containers. Airspace within a 4-mile (6-kilometer) radius of the park is controlled by a temporary flight restriction issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. Enbridge Gets Green Signal for Line 5 Steel Anchor Support

Enbridge Inc. ENB recently received a permit from the United States Army Corps of Engineers to provide anchor support for the Line 5 petroleum pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac, in the state of Michigan. Following the approval, the company began the installation of 54 steel supports to the pipeline, as erosion created a gap between the lake bottom and the pipe. In early August, the company stated that a stretch of lakebed had washed away, which left around 81-foot stretch of the pipeline without any support, almost six feet longer than the permissible limit. The installation of the support is expected to be completed by the end of this week. Notably, the company has installed 147 anchor supports on the Line 5′s dual pipes since 2002, in order to deal with a similar problem. The Line 5 has attracted interests from several environmental and tribal groups, who are rooting for the pipeline’s retirement. They are wary of the oil line’s present state and fearing that the pipeline could lead to a potential spill. Enbridge intends to install a multi-use utility tunnel that is to be drilled through the bedrock of the channel and decommission the 66-year old pipes. The company...

Sytner BMW and Mini Tamworth ready for repairs with new bodyshop tech

Simon Woodford, Sytner BMW division bodyshop development manager, said: “The launch of our flagship Tamworth BMW Stage One repair facility gave us an opportunity to take a fresh look at how we manage our work and to equip our bodyshop accordingly.” The BMW standard requires one BMW approved spraybooth at each of its Stage One sites, but with its collision repair business growing rapidly, Woodford and his team took the decision to issue a tender for two spraybooths, which STL won. The alloy spray booth will be able to finish between 15 and 20 wheels a day, freeing up space for the new bodyshop to focus on non-structural repairs in the other booths. NCAA bracket hall of fame: Every winner since 2014 and how they did it

Tens of millions of NCAA brackets have been filled out and entered in the past six years of the Bracket Challenge Game. Those six championship brackets averaged 51.8 correct pics out of the total 63 games every year — a picking percentage of about .822. In the same time the average Bracket Challenge Game bracket has managed approximately 42 correct picks, for a pick accuracy of almost 66.7 percent. The biggest takeaway from this bracket Hall of Fame? Look at where the scarce red marks are: Way off to the sides, in the early rounds. Abs Plastic Injection Molding Only one of these winning brackets didn’t get all four Elite Eight games correct, and every single one of them went three-for-three in the Final Four and championship. If you’re going to take some risks, do it early. These brackets averaged a pick accuracy of .799 over the first 48 games, but that shot up to .900 over the final 15. It is easy to see the attraction of using stainless steel as a building material for

It is easy to see the attraction of using stainless steel as a building material for boats because of the lack of corrosion problems and reduced maintenance during the life of the boat. However there are downsides, one of which of course is the higher cost of the material. When they were developing a new high performance patrol boat design, Swedish Steel Yachts (SSY) decided to build the vessel’s hull from stainless steel. This was a major step forward in patrol boat construction and now with the boat completed Rickard Levin of SSY has looked at the benefits and the problems that developed from using this innovative material. Using stainless steel for hull construction is not new but to use it for a high performance craft is a step into the future. Project P16 is Swedish Steel Yachts’ prototype of an offshore patrol vessel which has a hull constructed entirely of stainless steel for demanding use. The stainless steel used was supplied by Outokumpu, based in Finland and is their Forta SAF 2507 type which was selected because it is a material noted for its durability and strength. The hull design is based on a deep vee hull with a short vertical stem that helps to reduce the overa...

Clever contemporary design means this chic, agroturismo blends into the landscape in a particularly beautiful corner

Clever contemporary design means this chic, agroturismo blends into the landscape in a particularly beautiful corner of Majorca near Artà. Although it is a good base for unspoilt beaches and outdoor activities, you might just want to sink into a deckchair and switch off for a few days. The finca is on the estate of a working farm, just over a mile (2km) from the pretty hilltop town of Artà in the north east of Majorca. Palma is 43 miles (69km) away and it takes about an hour to drive from the airport. The only sound is the tweeting of the birds in the surrounding fields and meadows. You can drive to a string of beaches in 15 to 30 minutes and the Llevant nature reserve with unspoilt coves, hiking and cycling routes, is six miles (nine km) to the north. You can also walk and cycle through the countryside around the hotel. There are several golf courses within half an hour’s drive.   The rustic chic design – no country tweeness here – creates an atmosphere of cool calmness. The single-storey accommodation is separate from the farm and was built in 2017 using the local stone. Moorish-style water channels run alongside soft borders of perovskia, star jasmine, floribunda roses, trai...
