£18-a-pot caviar is farmed at an old mushroom plant in deepest Yorkshire

It is a region more usually associated with Yorkshire pudding, Tetley tea and Wensleydale cheese, but now God’s own county can boast a more exotic – and unexpected – contribution to Britain’s food supplies: caviar. The almost impossibly expensive delicacy is normally shipped from the chilly Caspian Sea to grace the delicatessen counters of stores such as Harrods and Fortnum & Mason. But now the sturgeon’s eggs are being produced in a former mushroom farm just outside Leeds – and going on sale in Aldi this week. ‘When I tell my friends that I work at a caviar farm, they say, “What? There’s a caviar farm in Yorkshire?” ’ exclaims Megan Babicz, ‘“No way!” ’ Yes way. Because Megan, 17, is one of five workers at KC Caviar, which you’ll find down a dirt track near the former coal mining town of Garforth, past fields of winter kale and turnips. I expected to discover a large lake – West Yorkshire’s very own Caspian. Instead, I was met by six large sheds, which a decade ago housed mushroom compost beds. Inside each shed are three tanks some 10ft across, which look like over-sized paddling pools. And inside each pool there are 30 5ft sturgeon – dark and strangely prehistoric looking...

Want to Mount a TV Above a Fireplace? Read This First

Q: We just bought a new 55-inch flat screen TV, and I’d like to hang it over the fireplace in our family room. But my husband’s afraid that heat from the fireplace will mess with it. Is it really a bad idea to mount a TV above a fireplace? A: Talk about a hot-button issue! You’re not the first person to think above the fireplace is an ideal spot for a TV; in fact, home builders often install electrical and cable outlets over the mantle (the horizontal shelf above the fireplace) for just that purpose. But depending on the type of fireplace you have, it could very well be a mistake to hang your new flat screen there—for reasons that go beyond the heat. Keep reading to find out why it might be best to locate your TV elsewhere. Excess heat and electronics don’t mix. A gas fireplace can generate 20,000 to 35,000 British thermal units (BTUs) of heat per hour. To put that into perspective, it takes approximately 15,000 BTUs per hour to heat an entire 1,400 square foot house during a typical New England winter. Heat rises, and even a fireplace with a blower that directs hot air toward the center of the room will still allow some heat to escape upward. This makes the area above the firep...

James Madison High School’s parental dress code sparked controversy

James Madison High School’s dress code for parents sparked a huge backlash after it was announced in April, but the principal of the Houston school is standing by the controversial policy. Announced in an April 9 letter, the dress code bars parents from visiting Madison High wearing ripped jeans, leggings, short-shorts, mini dresses, or tops that expose cleavage. A number of other items, including hair bonnets, rollers, and pajama pants, have been banned as well. In a statement to Vox, Principal Carlotta Outley Brown said she was compelled to implement the policy after one parent visited campus in a sheer top that exposed her breasts and a second walked in wearing low-cut jeans that exposed thong underwear. After a third parent arrived to school “in her night shirt and a cloth head wrap with rollers in her hair and flip flops,” Brown said that she decided to implement the dress code that had been in place at a previous school she led for 15 years. The policy there never became headline news, and Brown said that it has only attracted media attention now because a parent told the press she had been ousted from campus because of her attire. The principal said that staff tried to he...

Girl (12) suffered serious neglect at hands of parents

A TWELVE-year-old girl who suffered from neglect at the hands of her parents had to be cut out of a jumper because it was stuck to lesions seeping from her body. The horrific account of what the young girl suffered was outlined in Castlebar Circuit Court last week where her mother (46) and stepfather (56) each pleaded guilty to once count of wilful neglect of a child between December 27, 2016 and January 17, 2017. The accused person cannot be named due to reporting restrictions imposed to protect the identity of the victim, who is now 14 years old.Mr Patrick Reynolds, counsel for the prosecution, informed Judge Rory McCabe that on December 15, 2016, the girl was sent home from her national school with a severe case of head lice. On December 27, 2016, she was brought to her GP suffering from a rash and blisters, with a a golden crust all over her body and feeling unwell. She was referred to Mayo University Hospital where the doctor said she was suffering from a severe weeping rash all over her body and face. The infection of head lice was described as ‘chronic’ and the hospital staff had to cut six inches of her hair to treat it. A hospital report noted that she was underweight ...

Tidal pumping facilitates dissimilatory nitrate reduction in intertidal marshes

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. To obtain the best experience, we recommend you use a more up to date browser (or turn off compatibility mode in Internet Explorer). In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Intertidal marshes are alternately exposed and submerged due to periodic ebb and flood tides. The tidal cycle is important in controlling the biogeochemical processes of these ecosystems. Intertidal sediments are important hotspots of dissimilatory nitrate reduction and interacting nitrogen cycling microorganisms, but the effect of tides on dissimilatory nitrate reduction, including denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, remains unexplored in these habitats. Here, we use isotope-tracing and molecular approaches simultaneously to show that both nitrate-reduction activities and associated functional bacterial abundances are enhanced at the sediment-tidal water interface and at the tide-induced groundwater fluctuating layer. This pattern suggests that tidal pumping may sustain dissimilatory nitrate ...

The number of farms in Williamson County increased for the first time in two decades

The Park at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin used to be a fairly large farm, but now it’s a park. / File photo The number of farms in Williamson County rose from 1,160 in 2012 to 1,224 in 2017, an increase of about 6% That’s according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s census of agriculture, which is conducted every five years. The USDA released the results of the 2017 census last month. The number of acres operated also increased during the same period from 138,782 acres in 2012 to 141,868 acres in 2017, an increase of about 2%. The nation as a whole saw slight declines in the number of farmers and the number of acres under operation. According to data from the USDA, farms covered about 70% of Williamson County in 1959. That number was about 37% in 2017. Matt Horsman, the director of the University of Tennessee Agriculture Extension program in Williamson County, said those numbers roughly matched what he was expecting. “When you get beyond traditional ag, I think that’s where you’ll start to see quite a few things that are on the rise,” he said. “If you look across the last 20 years, you’re going to see lots of things increasing. The big traditional things, you might see thos...
